Initial Visit

·        I will go through the design process, discuss the client’s requirements, likes and dislikes, style and budget. I will suggest a design cost estimate at this stage. If accepted this leads to a site survey. It is important for the client to have an idea about how large a budget is available for the garden as this affects the design process.

Site Survey

·        Accurate measurement of the garden space.

·        Garden analysis noting good and bad features and the general ambience.

·        This leads to the preparation of an outline plan(s)

Outline Plan

·        This shows the basic outlines, layouts, features and materials proposed. It does not include plants. This is then presented to the client for discussion and suitability.

Provisional Scale plan

·        This is the result of the outline plan discussion; at this stage further minor amendments will be made free of charge. If however major reworking is required due to change of mind, unforeseen circumstances etc. a standard design fee of £40 per hour will be charged.

The Final plan

·        This is the fully detailed scale plan containing all modifications.

·        It will be hand drawn.

·        It is ready for a contractor's use.

·        It should be noted that certain design styles e.g. Japanese, involve using re-claimed and natural materials that are random in appearance, and therefore they cannot be totally specified on a plan. The final choice and placing on site has to be made by the designer or client.

Planting Plan

·        The final plan shows hard landscaping and indicates only a generic style of planting.

·        A planting plan gives specific planting, the size and number needed as well as location.

·        A planting plan is quoted for separately.

·        The cost depends on complexity, area, immediacy of plant impact and, like hard landscaping, is determined by the client's budget.

Construction

·        Having designed the garden Savage Splendour is ideally placed to construct it. In some designs (e.g. a Japanese dry river bed) it is necessary for the designer to be on-site.

·        However if the client prefers an independent landscaper I can put the design out to tender.

·        Most designs can also be built in stages.

Supervision

·        A supervisory service is available with regular site visits. This is charged at £40 per hour.

Planting

·        Savage Splendour delights in sourcing plants. These can be planted by us or a contractor.

Fees

·        Payable on receipt of the final plan.

·        It may be necessary to engage specialists e.g. Structural Engineers. These will be charged at cost plus 10%.

·        The design process from initial meeting to presentation of final plan can take up to 6 weeks.
